My role as a Children’s Social Worker in Buckinghamshire

Ever wondered what it’s like to work in Children’s Social Care? Mercy told us about her career journey and experience working as a Social Worker with Children at Buckinghamshire Council. Learn about the opportunities available today: https://jobs.buckinghamshire.gov.uk/

Prior to choosing a career path, I knew I’ve always loved children and initially I wanted to be a teacher or a nursery practitioner. However, life took a different turn, and I had three children of my own to manage at home, so once my youngest child went to secondary school, I decided it was time to do something for myself! That’s when I chose to go into social care — seeing it as an opportunity to support my community.

My role is very busy, especially in my team, which focuses on children with disabilities. It can be challenging, not only for the children but also for their families — particularly the parents. Families often come to the local authority seeking immediate support, which can sometimes be difficult to provide due to availability issues. Despite these challenges, we try our best to manage the situation, knowing that Buckinghamshire Council is very supportive of both families and staff.

One of the most rewarding aspects of my job is seeing the smiles on children’s faces. I have worked with families struggling with challenging behaviours, and once we put a support package in place, seeing the children enjoying community activities is incredibly fulfilling. Receiving thanks from families for the support we’ve provided makes my day and reaffirms my passion for my job.

I completed my studies in 2021 and joined the ASYE Academy. My journey from graduation to now has been entirely in Buckinghamshire, and the support I’ve received has been fantastic! From mentors to qualified social workers who buddy up with you, the support system has been instrumental in building my confidence and supporting me throughout my career.

I would encourage anyone to come to Buckinghamshire Council for the support and training opportunities available. The training is comprehensive and prompts you to refresh and reflect on your learning and values — it’s essential to remember to fill your own cup so that you can support families appropriately.

In summary, my journey in social care has been challenging but incredibly rewarding. The support from Buckinghamshire Council and the ASYE Academy has been invaluable, and I am proud to be part of a community that values and supports its staff and families.
