My name is Molly Sheppard…

I’m the SEN Administrator at Amersham School. I have worked here for 3 years. In my current role, I support the SENDCo in arranging Annual Reviews, meetings, school visits and completing admin.

I was unsure about my future career path when I left sixth form…

I finished sixth form after studying BTEC PE, Mathematics and Psychology at A-Level. I was unsure what career path to take, so I applied for a job as a Teaching Assistant at Amersham School. Following Lockdown, I had the opportunity to become SEN Administrator and progress further. I am now halfway through a part-time degree in Applied Education which I am completing while working.

Tell us a bit about your role and responsibilities as SEN Assistant…

I am responsible for the organisation of Annual Reviews and the submission of paperwork to the local authority. I also help organise the SENDCo’s calendar and the Teaching Assistants, plus other tasks required within the department.

What is a typical day like at Amersham school?

No day is ever the same — there is always something going on! Typically I start the day looking at moving Teaching Assistants to cover absences, attending the staff briefing, and attend to my list of administration tasks. I work occasionally as a Teaching Assistant to support my part-time degree.

The most rewarding part of the job is …

…watching students progress both academically and personally, even if it is only a small improvements.

The most challenging aspect of my role…

…managing the continuous administration tasks and small timescales.

What would you say to someone thinking of joining your school?

I would definitely recommend it — whether it is a career change or a change of educational setting. Both staff and students at the school are brilliant. There is always a warm welcome and continuous team support and spirit, no matter what the situation.

What sort of person would make a great Teaching Assistant for Amersham School?

Someone who is calm, a team player, professional and friendly, with flexibility to help support the team when required.
