My name is Clive. As Head of Revenues and Benefits, I provide leadership and direction, operational management and financial control for the Revenues and Benefits service area at Buckinghamshire Council. I am accountable for the delivery of high-quality strategic aims and I also support the delivery of the desired culture of the Council.

I started digging holes in the road back in the September of 1976 as a telecommunications apprentice…

I worked for BT until 2001, managing the public switched telephone network for Australasia and the Far East and wrote software to automate the provisioning of these networks. I later became Operations and IT Director for BT Conferencing. Since the pandemic, we all use MS Teams and are very familiar with conferencing, but it wasn’t so easy back in the 1990’s…

I later joined Mid Bedfordshire Council as Head of Customer Service and IT, with responsibility for Revenues and Benefits, and helped form Central Bedfordshire Council as part of the unitary team. In 2012, I moved closer to home, taking the role of Head of Revenues and Benefits at Luton Borough Council. At Luton, the team changed shape and won the Most Improved Team of the Year award at the IRRRV annual awards.

Last year, I was looking for a role to end my career on a high…

So I joined Buckinghamshire Council to lead the Revenues and Benefits team! We are working on a major project to merge four legacy systems into one and become one amazing single team.

My typical day has lots and lots of meetings…

I meet with my team, partners and suppliers. Some are leadership meetings, some are one-to-ones with my team to support their work and development. There are lots of project meetings as we work to deliver the single revenues and benefits system. Some are with partners like Citizens Advice, where we solicit feedback on our service offering.

Outside of work, I have four main hobbies…

Badminton as a player, assistant junior coach and international line judge. Lawn Bowls as a player. Skiing in the winter with friends and walking with the family all year round.

I really love my badminton and bowls...

On the days I have matches in the evenings I try to work from home so that I may have time to get ready. This works really well. Most of my line judging is done at weekends unless it is a major event.

Recently, I was a line judge at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games…

It was an amazing experience. I took ten days leave to be there. Working together with nine other line judges on a court was fantastic, Hawk- Eye and being televised added to the pressure. I am proud to say that I had 4 Hawk-Eye challenges and I made the correct call every time! My longest match took 102 minutes to play 3 games — one rally alone was 138 shots. That took some concentration.

It was wonderful to be part of a multi-sports event...

I went to the opening ceremony and managed to see netball, table tennis, lawn bowls, rhythmic gymnastics and the end of the men’s marathon while working as a technical official at the games. I get to keep the uniform and the Peaky Blinders-style cap.

The best part of my job at Buckinghamshire Council is the team I work with.

My team are so supportive and professional. We get on really well and are delivering tremendous change that will place the service in a very strong position when the single system project is completed in November.

This past year, I have learnt…

…that you can work hard and enjoy what you are doing and still have a work-life balance.
