Join our Communications team
We have a fantastic opportunity for someone who is passionate about social media and enjoys creating digital content, to join our Communications service. We spoke to Aaron, Design Lead at Buckinghamshire Council, about his career journey and the work you can expect to get involved with…
Hi, I’m Aaron, Design Lead within the Communications service at Buckinghamshire Council.
I joined the Council 18 years ago, starting as an Apprentice. Back then, my original plan was to do my studies, and then find another job. However, because there are so many opportunities at the Council, I always put myself forward whenever something new came up! So, when my apprenticeship finished, I moved on to a job in the Democratic Services team. Shortly after this, a secondment opportunity became available within Communications, which involved looking after the website. Whilst in the role, I used my previous design skills to deliver design work for the team, and this quickly developed into a new role being created for me as a Designer after my secondment.
I’ve been very fortunate to have received great support from the Council to continue my professional development. I was able to study a degree in Graphic Design during my time as a Designer, as well as other professional qualifications that have helped me to progress into my current position — I feel so grateful for the investment that the Council have provided me.
In my current role, I manage a small team of three talented Designers. As a team, we work with colleagues across the organisation to provide a first-class design service. This involves creating content that can be seen across a wide range of channels, and producing highly engaging design content for internal and external audiences. Examples of work include visual identities for campaigns, signage, animations, event or exhibition materials, branding/logo design, vehicle livery and graphics for social media.
As well as design, I am responsible for liaising with our suppliers and external agencies to fulfil print. I also work very closely with the other Leads within the Communications Team to stay up to date with recent developments or news on campaigns, social media, internal communications, or media content.
The new Social Media and Digital Lead will work closely with the other Leads within Communications to collaborate on any campaigns and projects. The Design team work very closely with Social Media to produce any graphics or animations to help support any planned content for campaigns or corporate messages.
The Communications team is a very friendly and sociable team. There is a great wealth of knowledge and skills across the team, and you know there is always someone who will be willing to help you out whenever you need a particular expertise! We have a fantastic camaraderie, and this was incredibly strong during the pandemic when we all came together as a new team and collaborated on COVID communications.
It is an exciting time to join the council, especially within Communications! We work with a broad range of services, meaning you gain a great knowledge and overview of what is happening within the organisation. The Council is fairly new having formed in 2020, and staff have the opportunity to contribute towards positive change and how we move forward as a new unitary authority.
