In the Spotlight: Mandeep Kaur
“My experience as a carer taught me invaluable lessons, particularly in patience. Caregiving helped me develop the ability to empathise with others, understand their needs, and go above and beyond to assist those in need.”
Hi Mandeep! Can you tell us about your career journey leading up to and during your time at the council?
I relocated to the UK in 2010 to join my fiancé, which was a significant adjustment. Coming from a large family and a close-knit community, the transition to a new lifestyle was challenging. My first job was being a carer, which I started in 2011. I then became a senior carer and then a care supervisor. I was always passionate about social work, but I did not think I could go to university full-time and qualify.
I saw the opportunity to join the council as a social work assistant and I applied for the position and managed to get it. It was the best decision I have ever made in my career. I am now in my second year of university, completing a social work degree.
Can you share more about your experiences as a carer and how they shaped your passion for social work?
My experience as a carer taught me invaluable lessons, particularly in patience. As a young girl, I was often impatient, but caregiving helped me develop the ability to empathise with others, understand their needs, and go above and beyond to assist those in need. This experience sparked my curiosity in social work, as I frequently interacted with social workers during my time as a carer.
Tell us about your current role.
I am currently working in the long-term review team in Adult Social Care. So, although I joined as a social work assistant, I am now a social work student/apprentice. I meet a lot of different people in my job role, and I work with other professionals, too, such as occupational therapists GPs, nurses, mental health teams, and so on.
How do you balance your studies and work, and what motivates you to keep going?
Balancing studies and work can be challenging, but it’s all about effective time management and setting clear priorities. It becomes easier when you have got support from your team and the managers, and I receive all the support I require to keep the balance.
What’s the most rewarding part of your job?
Ever since I started working, I feel that I have made a difference in people’s lives, even in small ways. Each day, I finish work feeling satisfied that I have done my best to help someone and made their life a little easier.
Can you share a story about a time when your team came together to overcome a significant challenge?
Challenges are indeed a constant part of our job. One particularly memorable instance occurred one Christmas when we were about to finish work early. We received an urgent call informing us that a person had been taken to the hospital, leaving her cats unattended at her property.
My coworker and I immediately rushed to the house, while our manager stayed on the phone, ensuring we were safe and supported. Other team members contributed by finding a cattery and coordinating logistics. Although we didn’t finish work early, the experience highlighted our team’s dedication and collaborative spirit, making it a Christmas to remember.

Do you take part in any staff networks?
I am part of various staff networks, such as the mental health network, and diversity and equality network. I am also a trained mental health first aider and a continuing health care champion.
I like to participate in different networks because I get to meet new people and use the knowledge I gain to help others.
What do you enjoy doing in your free time, and how do you unwind after a busy day at work?
I enjoy going for walks, listening to music, and spending quality time with my children and other family members. These activities help me relax and recharge, providing a balance between my personal and professional life.
Are there any hobbies or activities that you are passionate about outside of your professional life?
I am passionate about supporting various charities and organisations. I enjoy participating in fundraising activities, such as charity walks and runs. This year, I completed a charity run with my son, helping him raise over £120. Additionally, I often volunteer at my local Sikh temple on Sundays, which provides me with a profound sense of giving back to the community.
What are your long-term career goals, and how do you see yourself growing within the council?
My long-term career goals include advancing into leadership roles where I can influence policy and drive positive change within the community. I aim to continue developing my skills in social work and public administration, with a focus on creating inclusive and supportive environments for all residents.
Within the council, I see myself growing by taking on more complex projects and responsibilities, participating in professional development programs, and leveraging mentorship opportunities. I am committed to continuous learning and contributing to the council’s mission of serving the community effectively.
If you could give one piece of advice to someone starting their career in social work, what would it be?

Understanding and genuinely connecting with the individuals you are helping is crucial. By truly listening to their stories and needs, you can provide more effective support and make a meaningful impact in their lives.
