Empowering the Next Generation: Meet Tinevimbo, Children’s Social Worker
I completed my primary and high school education in Zimbabwe. I enrolled at Bindura University of Science Education Zimbabwe in 2016 where I studied social work. In 2020, I graduated with a Bachelors Honours Degree in Social Work. After graduation I volunteered for a few months at the Department of Social Services working with children and families and then started working as a residential care facility social worker at a local children’s home. After this, I decided to relocate to the UK where I started my ASYE social work journey.
Since I started my ASYE as an international social worker, the council has provided various training and practice development sessions. These have helped me to understand the legislation and polices that guide us as professionals to assist service users. I have received high level of support from my line manager and team managers which is really helpful, as well as a manageable case load.
The work that we do is of vital importance and ensures that all the children in care receive adequate aid in various aspects of their lives. We understand the challenges that children in care face from being separated from their birth families and the trauma that the children face because of this. We are there to provide advice, guidance, and link children to relevant service providers and advocate for their rights.
I once supported a young person who did not have the right to remain in the UK. The local authority had applied for the right to remain status on behalf of the child at the Home Office in 2021. Since 2021, the Home Office had not responded to the young person’s application which hindered him in terms of finding work, applying for a driver’s licence, opening a bank account, and getting the benefits which he was entitled to. However, I constantly contacted the Home Office asking for their assistance until the young person’s right to remain status was approved. This was a relief as the young person was turning 18 in just a few weeks.
I have had always had a passion for working in an industry that changes people’s lives for the better. The fact that my input can change the lives of children and their families for the better really keeps me motivated in my career. At Buckinghamshire Council, I receive high level and quality of support through personal and case supervisions and flexible working conditions. I would urge anyone to consider a career with Bucks as there is a nurturing and supportive environment, good salaries, and friendly, welcoming staff members.
