We spoke to Patience, Head of Service — Adult Social Care at Buckinghamshire Council about her role, and what Social Work Week means to her and social care staff in Buckinghamshire.

This year’s themes for Social Work Week are ‘Learn, Connect and Adapt’. How are these demonstrated in Buckinghamshire?

Social Work staff in Buckinghamshire are starting to be more visible in the community, such as working with the Voluntary Care sectors and sharing their knowledge and expertise. The Named Worker approach has also paved a way for Social Work staff to create a connection and build a rapport with service users and their families.

What makes you proud to work at Buckinghamshire Council?

I have been a Buckinghamshire Council employee since 2012 and am proud to say that working here has shaped my career. I have been part of several changes within the organisation, and whilst I acknowledge that change can be challenging to adapt to, the change in Buckinghamshire has brought transformation in terms of service delivery. The focus on ‘Strength-Based’ and ‘Person-Centred’ approaches embeds the social work values, by promoting the independence and dignity of the people we care for in Buckinghamshire. Since the Covid pandemic, Buckinghamshire Council has offered further flexible working conditions for colleagues, which has maintained a safe delivery of services to our vulnerable people and supports the well-being of staff.
